El Día Mundial del Medio ambiente (DMMA) fue establecido por la Asamblea General de la ONU en 1972 para marcar la apertura de la Conferencia de Estocolmo sobre El Medioambiente Humano.
Se conmemora cada año en Junio 5: (DMMA) es uno de los vehículos principales a través del cual Naciones Unidas estimula el conocimiento mundial del medioambiente y aumenta la atención y acción política. La agenda del día es para:
1. Dar una cara humana a los problemas medioambientales;
2. Autorizar a las personas para hacerse agentes activos del desarrollo sostenible y equitativo;
3. Promover una comprensión que las comunidades son cruciales para cambiar actitudes hacia los problemas medioambientales.
4. Impulsar sociedades que asegurarán a todas las naciones y sus habitantes disfrutar un futuro más seguro y más próspero.
El lema para DMMA 2009 es "Su Planeta lo Necesita a Usted-UNido para Combatir el Cambio Climático". Refleja la urgencia para que las naciones concierten un nuevo tratado en la convención crucial del clima que se reúne en Copenhague en unos 180 días mas tarde en el año, y los enlaces con superar la pobreza y mejorar la dirección de bosques.
El anfitrión de este año es México que refleja el papel creciente del país Latinoamericano en la lucha contra el cambio climático e incluye su participación aumentada en los mercados del carbono.
México también es un socio líder en la Campaña Billón de Árboles del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente (PNUMA) UNEP. El país con el apoyo de su Presidente y sus habitantes, ha liderado las donaciones y plantaciones de un 25 por ciento de los árboles bajo esta campaña. Considerando cerca del 1.5 por ciento de emisiones de gas de efecto invernadero, el país está demostrando su compromiso con el cambio climático en varios frentes.
El Presidente mexicano Felipe Calderón indica que la celebración de (DMMA) "resaltará mas la determinación de México para administrar recursos naturales y tratar con el desafío mas exigente del siglo 21 – El cambio climático".

Commemorated yearly on 5 June, WED is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The day's agenda is to:
1) Give a human face to environmental issues;

3) Promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues;
4) Advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.
The theme for WED 2009 is 'Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change'. It reflects the urgency for nations to agree on a new deal at the crucial climate convention meeting in Copenhagen some 180 days later in the year, and the links with overcoming poverty and improved management of forests.
This year’s host is Mexico which reflects the growing role of the Latin American country in the fight against climate change, including its growing participation in the carbon markets.
Mexico is also a leading partner in UNEP's Billion Tree Campaign. The country, with the support of its President and people, has spearheaded the pledging and planting of some 25 per cent of the trees under the campaign. Accounting for around 1.5 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, the country is demonstrating its commitment to climate change on several fronts.
Mexican President Felipe Calderon states that the WED celebration will “further underline Mexico's determination to manage natural resources and deal with the most demanding challenge of the 21st century – climate change.”

La noche del lanzamiento, después del himno de Granada, el maestro de ceremonias (Simon Keith, Granada) presentó a Elizabeth Osorio quien habló sobre la participación de PNUMA en el GEO Juvenil Caribe y también presentó un video de dos minutos de la directora ejecutiva de la oficina regional de Latino América y el Caribe de PNUMA, Mara Murillo. Después, habló Dedra Barlett, presidenta de CYEN y participante de la junta editorial. Ella habló acerca del proceso de elaboración del informe y de lo que significa el lanzamiento para CYEN y las islas caribeñas. Luego, Natalie Sandy, Oficial del ministerio de la Juventud de Granada actuó como representante del gobierno, compartió su felicidad de ser testigo de la culminación de estos esfuerzos hacia un modo de vida sostenible en los países del Caribe. Después, mientras Kerryann Branford facilitaba esta parte, el señor Devon Roché, representante de lo jóvenes en el Parlamento de Grenada, repartió méritos de CYEN a Andrew Simmons (St. Vincente y las Grenadinas), Aldrin Calixte (Haití), Nintus Magre (St. Lucia) y el equipo CYEN de Granada. El lanzamiento terminó con la distribución de los informes y un cóctel.
The night of the launch, after the Grenada National Anthem, the Master of Ceremonies (Simon Keith, Grenada) introduced Elizabeth Osorio who spoke about UNEP’s involvement in the GEO for Youth in the Caribbean and projected a two minute long video of Mara Murillo, the executive director of of UNEP’s regional office for Latin America and the Caribbean. The second speaker was Dedra Bartlett, CYEN’s regional Chairperson and participant in the editorial team of the GEO for Youth in the Caribbean. Dedra spoke about the process and what the launch of a GEO for Youth report meant to CYEN and to the Caribbean Islands. Lastly, Natalie Sandy - Youth Officer Ministry of Youth Empowerment of Grenada acted as government representative and shared her joy in seeing the young people of the Caribbean joining their efforts to help the Caribbean countries achieve a sustainable lifestyle. Then, while Kerryann Branford facilitated this part, Mr. Devon Roché -Youth Parliamentary Representative for Grenada handed the CYEN Award to Andrew Simmons (St. Vincents and the Grenadines), Aldrin Calixte (Haiti) Nintus Magre (St. Lucia) and the CYEN Grenada Team. The launch ended with the distribution of the reports accompanied by a cocktail.
