El PNUMA desarrolla sus premios anuales para resaltar a los Líderes Transformadores en Política Ambiental, Negocios, Sociedad Civil y Ciencia y Tecnología.
Nairobi / Global, noviembre de 2008 - Ya sea luchando contra el cambio climático, deteniendo la pérdida acelerada de la biodiversidad o promoviendo la agricultura sostenible y el reciclaje- notamos que algunas personas y organizaciones están haciendo una diferencia real y cambiando el entorno.
Podrían ser Presidentes, políticos, economistas, científicos o filósofos o tal vez músicos, artistas, actores, religiosos o figuras cívicas que se desenvuelven a nivel mundial, nacional o local.
También podrían ser líderes de la comunidad, líderes de negocios o líderes juveniles, los que están desencadenando una transformación encaminada en presentarnos hoy en día al mundo del mañana, transformando sus sociedades para que sean faros para un cambio fundamental y sostenible.
Quienquiera que sea y dondequiera que se encuentre, el PNUMA desea saberlo y lo busca ansiosamente, para premiar a los más brillantes y a los mejores como Campeones de la Tierra 2009.
Con las nuevas cuatro categorías, el PNUMA tiene por objetivo resaltar la urgencia de cooperación entre todos los actores y todos los sectores de la sociedad por alcanzar una Economía Verde Global; una que refleje las necesidades reales y las aspiraciones de seis mil millones personas que estarán aumentando a nueve mil millones en el 2050.
Achim Steiner, Secretario General Adjunto de las Naciones Unidas y Director Ejecutivo del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente (PNUMA), dijo: Estamos en busca de personas campeonas que sean inspiradoras y reales y de organizaciones que no se hayan desanimado al enfrentarse a problemas que a veces parecieran insuperables. Individuos y organizaciones que se niegan a aceptar el statu quo. "
"El mundo se está enfrentando a múltiples crisis y de igual forma a grandes oportunidades de evolucionar a una mayor eficiencia de los recursos y a una gestión del planeta mas inteligente. Hay quienes han estado trabajando durante décadas y otros que justo ahora se están uniendo al grupo ", dijo.
"Por esta razón, queremos aprender de estos candidatos extraordinarios y catalizadores que provienen desde Asia y el Pacífico, Asia Occidental y Europa hasta África, América Latina y el Caribe y Norte América. ¿Quién es su Campeón de la Tierra 2009? ", agregó el Señor Steiner.
La ceremonia de entrega de premios 2009 tendrá lugar de forma paralela con la Cumbre Anual Mundial Empresarial para el Medio Ambiente (B4E), co-auspiciada por el PNUMA y el Pacto Mundial de Naciones Unidas en París, Francia; el próximo mes de abril.
En La Cumbre, a la que asistirán líderes empresariales internacionales además de políticos, hará hincapié en los desafíos medio ambientales más urgentes a los que se enfrenta el mundo actual y se tratarán soluciones negociables, orientadas a la mitigación y adaptación al cambio climático.

Ninguna recompensa monetaria se adjunta al premio. Cada laureado recibe un trofeo diseñado especialmente para la ocasión con materiales amigables con el medio ambiente.
El PNUMA recibe postulaciones de personas que han hecho una contribución importante a nivel mundial, regional y más allá, en pro de la protección y la gestión sostenible del medio ambiente y de los recursos naturales. La fecha límite para la recepción es el 1 de diciembre de 2008. Los candidatos serán juzgados por un panel de alto nivel del PNUMA.

Do You Know a 2009 Champion of the Earth?
UNEP Evolves its Annual Awards to Spotlight Transformational Leaders in Environmental Policy, Business, Civil Society and Science & Technology.
Nairobi/World, 7 November 2008 - Whether it be combating climate change or stemming the accelerating loss of biodiversity or promoting sustainable agriculture and recycling - some people and organizations are making a real and landscape-shifting difference.
They may be Presidents, politicians, economists, scientists or philosophers or perhaps musicians, artists, actors, religious or civic figures operating on the global, national or local stage.
They may be community leaders, business leaders or youth leaders who are triggering a transformation aimed at bringing forward tomorrow's world today by turning their societies into beacons of fundamental and sustainable change.
Whomever and wherever they are UNEP wants to know and looks forward to award the brightest and the best as a 2009 Champion of the Earth.
With the new four categories, UNEP aims to highlight the urgency of cooperation between all players and all sectors of society to achieve a global Green Economy: one that reflects the real needs and aspirations of six billion rising to nine billion people by 2050.
Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), said: "We are looking for real and inspirational champions - people and organizations who are not fazed by what can sometimes seem to be insuperable challenges. Individuals and organizations who refuse to accept the status quo."
"The world is facing multiple crises but also huge opportunities to move to a more resource-efficient, more intelligently-managed planet. There are those who have been working for decades and others who have are just now stepping up to the bar," he said.
"So we want to learn about these outstanding and catalytic candidates from Asia and the Pacific, West Asia and Europe to Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean and North America. Who is your Champion of the Earth 2009?" said Mr Steiner.
The 2009 award ceremony will take place in parallel to the annual Global Business Summit for the Environment (B4E), co-hosted by UNEP and the United Nations Global Compact in Paris, France, next April.
The Summit, attended by international business leaders and policy makers, will highlight the most urgent environmental challenges facing the world and discuss business-driven solutions for mitigating and adapting to climate change.

No monetary reward is attached to the prize. Each laureate receives a trophy designed especially for the occasion with environmentally friendly materials.
UNEP invites nominations from individuals who have made a significant contribution globally, regionally and beyond, to the protection and sustainable management of the environment and natural resources. Deadline for receipt of nominations is on 1 December 2008. Candidates are judged by a senior UNEP panel.
