UNESCO Regional Meeting-‘Youth Networks and Policies’’
Within the International Conference of the Americas - CILA 2008 frameworks, the first “UNESCO Regional Networks and Policy 2008 " meeting was held in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic from October 15th to 18th of 2008.
For this meeting, UNESCO invited various agencies / partners at the UN agencies such as UNDESA, UN-Habitat, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNECLAC, UNEP, UNV, UNODC, WHO / PAHO, UNESCO and the World Bank to support them with our experience on youth networks. UNESCO is forming a new network named "Youth Network for the Americas” and also want to keep synergies within other networks from the UN agencies.
Our participation (TUNZA & GEO for Youth) was focused on providing support during the workshops which were developed with youth representatives from all countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. In addition, support was given in drafting of the "Declaration of Punta Cana," written by the young participants and presented to the President of the Dominican Republic, Dr. Leonel Fernandez Reyna.
Each agency made a presentation to the audience and explained in detail the network that represented. These presentations, also, were important for make synergies between representatives of different NGOs and UN agencies related to the issue of Youth.

Encuentro Regional UNESCO “Redes y Políticas de Juventud’’
Dentro del marco de La Conferencia Internación de Las Américas CILA 2008 se realizó la primera Reunión Regional de Redes y Políticas de Juventud 2008, en Punta Cana, República Dominicana del 15 al 19 de octubre de 2008.
Para esta reunión, UNESCO invitó a varias agencias / socios del sistema de Naciones Unidas tales como UNDESA, UN- Hábitat, UNICEF, CEPAL, PNUMA, UNV, WHO/PAHO, UNESCO y el Banco Mundial para apoyarles con nuestras experiencias sobre redes juveniles.
UNESCO actualmente está formando una nueva red de jóvenes denominada “Red Juvenil de Las Américas” y espera que esta nueva red mantenga sinergias con las otras redes de Naciones Unidas.
Nuestra participación (TUNZA & GEO Juvenil) estuvo enfocada en proveer asistencia durante los talleres que fueron desarrollados para/por jóvenes representantes de todos los países de la región de América Latina y el Caribe. Además, apoyar durante la elaboración de la “Declaración de Punta Cana”, escrita por los jóvenes participantes y presentada al presidente de la República Dominicana, el Dr. Leonel Fernández Reyna.
Cada agencia - socio de Naciones Unidas hizo una presentación a la audiencia y explicó los detalles de la red que representaba. Estas presentaciones fueron importantes para generar una mayor integración entre las diferentes ONGs y agencias de Naciones Unidas relacionadas con el tema de juventud.

El Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente (PNUMA) lanzó, en 2003, la Estrategia Tunza, que es un plan de seis años con el objetivo de aumentar la participación de jóvenes y niños en temas medioambientales.

Culmina en 2008 el plan que fue diseñado para seis años (2003-2008) y el PNUMA está comprometido en dar continuidad a la estrategia. Para eso, está llevando adelante consultas a nivel mundial sobre el documento que establecerá la próxima Estrategia Tunza (2009-2014). Este documento está disponible para su análisis aquí (solo en inglés).

Hay una encuesta con cuatro preguntas-clave para su consideración y un espacio para otros comentarios que creas importantes. Para contestarlas pincha aquí.

Apreciaremos recibir sus comentarios hasta el 25 de Julio de 2008.

Entre 28 y 30 de Julio el PNUMA diseñará el documento final basado en los comentarios presentados y, una vez que esté listo, cada uno de ustedes será notificado sobre el link para encontrarlo.

Dear friends,

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) launched, in 2003, the Tunza Strategy, to actively engage children and youth in environmental issues.

The six-year strategy is nearing the end of its mandate in 2008, and the UNEP is committed to providing its continuity. For this purpose, the UNEP is excited to launch a global-level consultation process that will establish the next Tunza Strategy (2009-2014). This document is available here.

The survey has four key questions for your consideration, and some space for other comments that might be of importance to you. To participate in the survey, click here.

Please send us your comments by July 25th, 2008.

Between 28-30th July, UNEP will finalize the strategy based on all of the comments that you sent in and, when it’s ready, each of you will be notified about the link where the document can be publicly accessed.

Hola a todos(as)!

Les escribo para decir que la conferencia de niños esta yendo muy bien! Pero, es una pena que ayer empezó a llover =(

Ceci [Iglesias - GEO Juvenil Argentina] organizó una actividad para los niños(as) de ALC, así que estamos recogiendo sus impresiones sobre la Conferencia, lo que se puede mejorar y eso. Queremos compartir con ustedes nuestra experiencia una vez que volvamos a nuestros países.

Hoy tuvimos la candidatura para el Junior Board. De nuestra region son candidatos: Nacho, de Argentina, Marina (de Brasil), Acona (de Colombia) y un niño de Bermuda que les pido disculpas, pero acabamos recién de conocerlo y no memoricé su nombre.

Mañana vamos tener una charla con Cecilia Kibare y Theo [PNUMA] con propuestas para la nueva estrategia Tunza. Creo que hoy nos la van a dar para mirar y analizar lo que ya está escrito. Esperamos tener una copia en el pen drive para hacérselas llegar a ustedes también.

Hi everyone!

I'm writing to tell you that the Children's Conference has been great! But it's a pity that it started to rain yesterday =(

Ceci [Iglesias - GEO for Youth in Argentina] organized an activity for the children in LAC, so we can collect their impressions about the Conference, what we can improve and so on. We want to share our experience with you as we get back to our homes.

Today we had the candidacy for the Junior Board. The candidates from our region are: Nacho (Argentina), Marina (Brazil), Acona (Colombia) and a delegate from Bermuda, that I ask for apologize, but we have just met him and I haven't memorized his name.

Tomorrow we will have a talk with Cecilia Kibare and Theo [UNEP] in order to give some proposals about the new Tunza Strategy. I think that they will give the document to us today to have a look and analyse what is writen. We hope to have a copy in our pen drives to, so we can make it available to you too.

Ayer, en Stavanger, Noruega, el PNUMA dejó inaugurada la Conferencia Internacional TUNZA para Niños sobre el Medio Ambiente 2008 bajo el lema "Creando Cambio".
The UN Environment Programme Tuesday opened the TUNZA International Children's Conference on the Environment 2008, in Stavanger, Norway. Its theme is "Creating Change".

Día Mundial Contra la Desertificación // World Day to Combat Desertification

El 17 de junio se conmemoró un nuevo “Día Mundial contra la Desertificación”. Este año, el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente utilizó como lema “Luchando contra la degradación de la tierra para una agricultura sostenible”.
Las celebraciones buscan destacar la trascendencia y de la gestión de las tierras para la actividad agrícola, la base de la civilización humana.
En este sentido, el PNUMA subrayó el papel central de la ciencia y la tecnología en la lucha contra la degradación de la tierra y el desarrollo de una agricultura sostenible
Julio Calderón, especialista en recursos naturales del PNUMA, explicó que el hombre es responsable en un 80% del deterioro y la pérdida de valiosos suelos cultivables en todo el planeta.
“El proceso de desertificación tenemos que abordarlo y ahora que se está viviendo una crisis alimentaria más que nunca tenemos que preservar los valiosos suelos implementando y buscando medidas innovadoras para garantizar una agricultura sustentable en todo el planeta”, dijo.
Por su parte, en su mensaje para la ocasión, el secretario ejecutivo de la Convención de ONU de Lucha contra la Desertificación, Luc Gnacadja, consideró que el conocimiento tradicional necesita ser identificado, preservado y compartido para evitar la degradación de la tierra.
Agregó que la investigación científica, combinada con este conocimiento, debería estar integrada por políticas y estrategias destinadas al desarrollo sostenible.

Jóvenes en acción!
50 estudiantes de secundaria están implementando desde el año pasado un proyecto de repoblamiento vegetal en un área afectada por desertificación en Chubut (Patagonia Argentina). Se trata de una iniciativa de GEO Juvenil Argentina en Chubut que cuenta con el apoyo del Programa Be The Change! de Peace Child International. Los jóvenes crearon un vivero en la escuela donde cultivan las especies arbustivas nativas Atriplex lampa (zampa), Senecio filaginoides (mata mora) y Grindelia chiloensis (botón de oro). Una vez cumplido el acondicionamiento de las plantas, éstas serán finalmente trasladadas a un campo situado a 10,5 km de la ciudad de Trelew diagnosticado con un grado de desertificación leve. Con esta experiencia se pretende generar conciencia en la comunidad y replicar la metodología en otros lugares afectados por la misma problemática.

With a global food crisis meaning higher prices for food for some and hunger for the less fortunate, experts are reminding us of the importance of productive land. On this World Day to combat desertification and drought, it's important to remember that we can reclaim dry or degraded land and this land could offer a long-term solution to producing more food for more people. A UN Convention to Combat Desertification actually provides a way to do just that. Diane Bailey spoke to Luc Nya cadja, the Executive Secretary of the Convention, who began by telling me who is currently degrading the land we have.

Youths in action!
50 students of secondary are implementing from the past year a project of vegetal repopulation in an area affected by desertification in Chubut (Patagonia Argentina). It is an initiative of GEO for Youth Argentina in Chubut and has on the support of the Be The Change! Program of Peace Child International. The young people created a greenhouse in the school where they cultivate the native bush species Atriplex lampa (zampa), Senecio filaginoides (mata mora) and Grindelia chiloensis (botón de oro). Finished the preparation of the plants, will be transferred to a field located to 10.5 km of the city of Trelew.

La Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas, celebrada el 22 de Diciembre de 2005, proclamó el 2008 Año Internacional del Planeta Tierra.

Ya comenzó el Año Internacional del Planeta Tierra, declarado por Naciones Unidas y al que ya se han adherido más de 80 países. Su objetivo es generar una mayor conciencia de la importancia de las geociencias para la vida humana y su prosperidad, así como estimular el reconocimiento de las contribuciones sociales de las geociencias en los Sistemas Nacionales de Educación.
La celebración de este año (que concluirá en 2009) persigue concienciar a la sociedad de la relación existente entre Humanidad y Planeta Tierra, y demostrar el enorme potencial de las Ciencias de La Tierra para la creación de un futuro equilibrado y sostenible que permita aumentar la calidad de vida, a la vez que salvaguardar la dinámica planetaria que lo hace posible.
El esfuerzo del Programa de Ciencias del Año internacional del Planeta Tierra, será canalizado a través de 10 temas multidisciplinarios de relevancia para la sociedad: Aguas Subterráneas , Peligros Naturales, Tierra y Salud, Clima, Recursos Naturales, Tierra Profunda, Océanos, Mega Ciudades, Suelos y Tierra y Vida.

The UN General Assembly held on December 22, 2005, proclaimed 2008 the International Year of Planet Earth.

It began the International Year of Planet Earth, declared by the United Nations and which already have joined more than 80 countries. Its aim is to generate greater awareness of the importance of geosciences to human life and prosperity, as well as encourage the recognition of social security contributions of geosciences at the National Systems of Education.

The celebration of this year (2009) aims to sensitize society of the relationship between mankind and earth, and demonstrate the enormous potential of Earth Sciences for the creation of a balanced and sustainable future, which would increase the quality of life, while safeguarding the planetary dynamics that makes it possible. The effort of Sciences Program for the International Year for Planet Earth, will be channelled through 10 multidisciplinary topics of relevance to society: Groundwater, Natural Hazards, Earth and Health, Weather, Natural Resources, Deep Earth, Oceans, Mega Cities Soil and Land and Life.
