The United Nations Environment Programme in cooperation with UNEP National Committee for the Republic of Korea will be hosting the 2009 TUNZA International Children’s Conference on the Environment in Daejeon, Korea from the 17 to 21 August 2009. The Conference whose theme will be Climate Change: Our Challenge will collectively bring together about 400 participants (aged 10 to 14) from over 100 countries.

The daily themes will include:
Climate change and its effect on bio-diversity
Climate change and young people
Water
Sustainable lifestyle

The delegates will be introduced to the new Tunza Strategy (2009-2014), and will discuss their role in the implementation of the Strategy. Volvo Adventure

Este año tenemos nuevamente el premio de la Volvo Adventure.
Este informe está dirigido a las personas que desean participar en el premio Volvo Adventure. Pueden participar equipos de dos a cinco jóvenes que estén llevando a cabo una acción práctica para mejorar el entorno de su escuela o comunidad. El premio se destinará a proyectos que ya se estén desarrollando y que hayan tenido un impacto positivo en el medioambiente. Si todavía estás empezando, también podemos ofrecerte recursos para ayudarte a poner tu plan en práctica con la referencia de otros proyectos que tuvieron éxito en el pasado. Muchos de los ganadores se registraron un año y presentaron su proyecto el año siguiente.

Los jóvenes, entre 13 y 16 años, deben diseñar planes de acción que beneficien al medioambiente. Será necesario especificar el papel desempeñado por cada participante en el proyecto y las acciones en las que han participado. La idea central del proyecto puede ser cualquier asunto relacionado con el medioambiente que hayáis encontrado interesante; por ejemplo se han presentado proyectos sobre:
Biodiversidad – de qué manera ayuda la gente joven a los animales y las plantas en su comunidad.
Desechos – qué medidas han tomado los jóvenes para reducir el volumen de desechos y reutilizar y reciclar más.
Agua – cómo han logrado mejorar la calidad del agua en su escuela o comunidad.
Energía – qué métodos han utilizado para reducir el consumo de energía o hacerlo más sostenible.
Transporte – cómo los jóvenes han realizado campañas para reducir la congestión del tráfico local.

Lo único que tienes que hacer es registrarte y exponer tu idea AQUÍ.

Los grupos que hayan enviado los mejores proyectos tendrán la oportunidad de presentarlos en una conferencia internacional que se celebrará en Suecia y competirán por el premio final. Todas las ideas y planes de acción se publicarán y presentarán en el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el medio ambiente. Este informe tiene como finalidad ayudarte a inscribir tu proyecto en el sitio Web. En la siguiente sección se detallan los aspectos que debe cubrir tu propuesta. Puedes preparar las respuestas antes de registrar tu proyecto en la Web.

This is a briefing for people wishing to enter the Volvo Adventure award. The award is for teams of two to five young people working on a practical action project that will improve their school or community environment. It is an award for ongoing environmental projects that have had a positive impact on the environment. If you are just starting out we also offer resources to help you plan and develop your project based on successful past projects. Many winners have registered one year and entered the following year.

The young people aged 13 to 16 years should be devising action plans to help their environment. You will need to show the role that young people have had in the project and the actions they have taken. Your project can focus on any environmental subject that you have found interesting. For example we have had projects focussing on:
Biodiversity – how young people help animals and plants in their community.
Waste – what young people have done to reduce waste, reuse and recycle more.
Water – how young people improved the water quality in their community or school.
Energy – how young people helped to reduce energy use or make it more sustainable.
Transport – how young people campaigned to reduce local traffic congestion.

All you have to do is register and return your entries to us. The best entries will be asked to join an international conference to present their ideas in Sweden and compete for the final prizes. All of the ideas and action plans will be published and presented to the United Nations Environment Programme. This briefing paper has been designed to help you prepare your entry for the web site submission tool. The next section provides details of what each part of your entry should cover. Este año, nosotros queremos más pinturas!!! Más pinturas del Caribe, más de Mesoamérica, más de los países andinos y del Cono Sur; nosotros queremos más porque sabemos el talento que existe en nuestros países. Realmente, quiero que me den mucho, mucho trabajo procesando miles de ejemplares.

I am really exciting for this new opportunity. The last year UNEP ROLAC only reported 600 entries. For us, this quantity was not representatives of our young region.
This year, we want more paintings!!! More painting from Caribbean, more from Mesoamerica, more from Andean countries, more from South Cone; we want more because we know that LAC countries have a lot of talent. I got very happy today when I checked my e-mail and saw that many of you had answered the survey about the strategy. Thanks to all of you that made an effort to help us out with this.

Unfortunately there are still some countries in the region that haven't replied. That would be good to have impressions of youth in each country in the region. We haven't received comments from Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobaco, S. Domigo, and Dominican Republic. I ask you to send your comments to us by friday (25).

THE EIGHTEENTH INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S PAINTING COMPETITION ON THE ENVIRONMENT

The International Children’s Painting Competition on the Environment is organized every year by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Japan-based Foundation for Global Peace and Environment (FGPE), Bayer and Nikon Corporation. It has been held since 1991 and has received more than 190,000 entries from children in over 100 countries. This year’s Competition will focus on the challenges of climate change and what we can do about it.

The children’s paintings can focus on concrete actions such as using renewable energy, energy saving light bulbs at home, sharing vehicles and using public transport, planting trees, etc. The competition will run from 1 July 2008 to 15 January 2009. The organizers invite children all over the world to submit their paintings to the UNEP office in their regions.

Entry Rules and Conditions:

Children between the age of 5 and 13 years.
1) Paintings must be done on A4 OR A3 papers. (210 X 295 MM, 11-3/4" x 8-1/4".)
2) Full name, age (day, month, year) and full address including phone and e-mail (in English) must be on the back of the painting.
3) Style of painting is free: crayons, colored pencils, watercolors, etc.
4) Paintings that have been shown or accepted elsewhere will not be accepted in this competition.
5) Paintings that show a particular person, an organization or a brand name will not be accepted.
6) Do not include any words or descriptions in the paintings.
7) Only hard copies of paintings will be accepted. (E-mail entries will only be accepted after by hard copies is received).

Prizes:

Global winners:
The 1st Prize:
One entrant - US$ 2,000 with a fully paid trip for the winner and a chaperone to the 2009 Tunza International Children’s Conference (date and venue to be confirmed later). The winner will also receive a plaque and supplementary prizes.
The 2nd Prize:
One entrant - US$ 1,000 each and a fully paid trip for winners and chaperones to the 2009 Tunza International Children’s Conference (date and venue to be confirmed later). Each winner will also receive a plaque and supplementary prizes.
The 3rd Prize:
Five entrants – A diploma for each winner (No cash)
The 4th Prize:
Ten entrants – A diploma for each winner (No cash)
The 5th Prize:
Forty five entrants – A diploma for each winner (No cash)

Regional winners:
One winner only from each region: Africa; Asia and the Pacific; West Asia; Europe; Latin America and the Caribbean; and North America.
US$ 1,000 and fully paid trip for each winner and chaperones to the venue of the 2009 Tunza International Children’s Conference (venue and date to be confirmed later).

(Note that by entering the Competition, you have assigned copyright of your painting(s) to the organizers. The painting(s) will not be returned and will be used to raise environmental awareness through exhibition, websites, posters, publications etc) and -to raise funds to further promote environmental activities by children.

Selection of winners:
Winners will be selected through a fair and impartial selection by the organizers.

Announcement of winners:
(1) Regional winners will be announced on 22 April 2009

(2) Global winners will be announced at the venue of the 2009 Tunza International Children’s Conference (venue and dates to be confirmed later)

Deadline:
Entries must reach the relevant UNEP regional office by 15 January 2009 at the latest.

Hola Tunza people!!!

Quacy (de Guyana) me preguntó una cosa que creo ser de interés de todos. El Global Youth Retreat acontecerá en fines de Julio. No sé la fecha exacta todavía, pero estoy intentando obtenerla. Como ustedes deben saber, es allí donde tendremos la aprobación de la próxima Estrategia Tunza.

Handy y yo queremos garantizar que tendremos un proceso de consulta amplio en nuestra región y que recibamos buenas contribuiciones. Para eso, nosotros necesitamos de vuestra ayuda y, si pueden, disponer un tiempo para leer la estrategia y apuntar cosas que creen que deben ser cambiadas/agregadas/sacadas (!!!). Yo no puedo enviar un correo para cada uno de ustedes pero espero que ustedes sepan cuán importante es CADA UNO de sus comentarios. Esperamos recibir el primer borrador de la estrategia a fines de esta semana.

Sobre la Conferencia Internacional de Niños nosotros tenemos un nuevo Junior Board. Handy y yo ayudamos a contar los votos y de América Latina y Caribe la ganadora fue Marina (de Brasil).

Una última novedad: parece que la proxima Conferencia Internacional Tunza para Jóvenes será en Egipto. Pero no está cierto todavía porque los organizadores deben presentar una propuesta para el PNUMA. Si es aceptada, será allí. Exótico, no? Y nosotros estamos esperando ser consultados sobre las actividades/temas de la próxima conferencia.

Hi Tunza people!!!

Quacy (from Guyana) asked me a question that I think it is of general interest. The Global Youth Retreat is going to be in the end of July. I haven't received the right date yet, but I'm working on that. As you might be aware, there we'll have the approval to the next Tunza Strategy.

Handy and I want to make sure that we have a great consultation process in our region and that we'll get good inputs. For that, we need your help and, yes, take some time to read the strategy carefully and point what you think should be changed/added/erased (!!!). I can not send an e-mail for each of you, but I hope you understand how important EACH of your comments are. We hope to receive the first draft for consultation by the end of this week.

About the International Children's Conference (ICC) we have a new Junior Board. Handy and I helped on counting the votes and from Latin America and Caribbean the winner was Marina (from Brazil).

One last new: it seems that the next Tunza International Youth Conference will be held in Egypt. But it's not for sure yet because the organizers must present a proposal to UNEP. If accepted, it'll be there. Exotic, hum? =) And we are hoping to get consulted regarding the activities/themes of this next conference.

Hola a todos(as)!

Les escribo para decir que la conferencia de niños esta yendo muy bien! Pero, es una pena que ayer empezó a llover =(

Ceci [Iglesias - GEO Juvenil Argentina] organizó una actividad para los niños(as) de ALC, así que estamos recogiendo sus impresiones sobre la Conferencia, lo que se puede mejorar y eso. Queremos compartir con ustedes nuestra experiencia una vez que volvamos a nuestros países.

Hoy tuvimos la candidatura para el Junior Board. De nuestra region son candidatos: Nacho, de Argentina, Marina (de Brasil), Acona (de Colombia) y un niño de Bermuda que les pido disculpas, pero acabamos recién de conocerlo y no memoricé su nombre.

Mañana vamos tener una charla con Cecilia Kibare y Theo [PNUMA] con propuestas para la nueva estrategia Tunza. Creo que hoy nos la van a dar para mirar y analizar lo que ya está escrito. Esperamos tener una copia en el pen drive para hacérselas llegar a ustedes también.

Hi everyone!

I'm writing to tell you that the Children's Conference has been great! But it's a pity that it started to rain yesterday =(

Ceci [Iglesias - GEO for Youth in Argentina] organized an activity for the children in LAC, so we can collect their impressions about the Conference, what we can improve and so on. We want to share our experience with you as we get back to our homes.

Today we had the candidacy for the Junior Board. The candidates from our region are: Nacho (Argentina), Marina (Brazil), Acona (Colombia) and a delegate from Bermuda, that I ask for apologize, but we have just met him and I haven't memorized his name.

Tomorrow we will have a talk with Cecilia Kibare and Theo [UNEP] in order to give some proposals about the new Tunza Strategy. I think that they will give the document to us today to have a look and analyse what is writen. We hope to have a copy in our pen drives to, so we can make it available to you too.
